Cantharellus xanthopus (Pers.) Duby syn. Cantharellus lutescens sensu Fr. Cap 1-6cm across, convex becoming flatter with a crimped, wavy margin and a sunken center, later becoming vase-shaped with a raised margin; orange-yellow to brownish yellow; small coarse brownish hairs or scales give whole surface a brownish tinge. Fertile undersurface descending stalk; dingy yellowish brown to buff, smooth to slightly veined or wrinkled. Stem 20-50 x 1-15mm, stuffed becoming hollow, often curved or compressed; orange; smooth and slightly hairy at base. Flesh very thin; pale buff to orangish. Odor not distinctive. Taste not distinctive. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, nonamyloid, 9-11 x 6-7.5µ. Deposit pale orange-buff. Habitat in groups or clusters on damp, mossy wood in low, wet mixed woods. Found in eastern North America and Europe. Season July-September. Edible. |
